\n\n,The Bicycle Island app is helping to turn the Isle of Wight Cowes to Newport cycle route into the UK’s first SMART cycling corridor. The app sets regular distance challenges for the community to aim at. Every user’s journey along the cycle route contributes to the overall target. If the target is reached a local Isle of Wight charity gets a donation. Access the leaderboards to see how your personal distance compares to other riders. Or set up a team and see if your group can get to the top of the table. Local businesses place special offers at different locations along the route. You have to ride the route to unlock them in the app. The Guide section of the app provides a wealth of information about the rich wildlife and fascinating history of this stretch of the Medina River. From the app dashboard you can select if you want to track journeys automatically or not. If journey tracking is enabled the app uses GPS to determine your location when the app is running in the background. We have used GPS in a power-efficient way - only checking location if you have moved a significant distance until you get near the cycle route at which point it checks more regularly. However, as with all apps that use location, please note that continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.\n\n
